How to Start Making a Room Spray Without Chemicals?
You don’t need a chemistry degree to make a room spray, just ingredients you can actually pronounce!
Whenever I browse the shelves, I see sprays with names like Moonlight Peony and Lily or Amber and Patchouli. They sound so tempting, but often the fragrance is overpowering and the ingredients list reads like another language.
Most shop-bought sprays use a mix of synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and stabilisers. They aren’t necessarily “bad,” but they don’t feel as warm or familiar as a simple blend you’ve made yourself.
That’s what made me try mixing my own. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a natural spray that feels personal and it only takes five minutes.
DIY Room Spray Recipe
Choose your oils:
First pick two oils that contrast nicely: one fresh and one grounding.
Here are a few of my favourites:
Grapefruit + Sandalwood → bright and creamy
Lemon + Lavender → fresh and calming (a classic)
Orange + Rosemary → fruity and herbal, very kitchen-friendly
You’ll need:
This makes about 120ml-130ml Room spray blend
A 150 ml spray bottle
~120 ml distilled or filtered water
1 teaspoon of clear alcohol
2 Essential oils that contrasts nicely (medium strength 3% of the volume so about 70 drops)
In this demo, I’m using a medium blend of 70 drops with grapefruit and sandalwood: that’s 35 drops (about ½ teaspoon) of grapefruit + 35 drops (about ½ teaspoon) of sandalwood.
Choose whichever pairing you like best (see the combos above), and just split the total drops between the two.
What I do:
Pour 120 ml water into the spray bottle.
Add your essential oils
Add 1 teaspoon of alcohol.
Pop the lid on and give it a good shake before each use.
Where I Spray it : in the lounge area, over sofa’s cushions, entrance doorframe.
Scent Smarter: A Quick Safety Note
Essential oils are natural but strong. If you have pets or children, check which oils are safe for them, and avoid spraying directly on their belongings.
