How to Make Your Home Smell Like a Coastal Escape?

It’s cheaper than a plane ticket, and there’s no sand stuck between your toes.

You know that nostalgic feeling when a holiday ends and you return to your routine? For me, that feeling is tied to those massive, sandy beaches in Normandy not quite the Seychelles, but just as good for an escape.

This autumn, as the days get shorter and the weather shifts, I’ve found a way to capture that summer escape right at home , with a simple, homemade room spray that takes me straight back to the coast.

DIY Room Spray: Coastal Vibes

This blend is my take on those elegant coastal scents. it ‘s fresh, breezy, with just a touch of woodiness. inspired by The White Company’s Seychelles.

👉 The original Seychelles has coconut and jasmine in the mix, but I wanted a simplified and accessible version so this blend below still captures that sun-warmed, coastal vibe, without needing lots of different oils.

You’ll need:

  • 120 ml distilled or filtered water

  • 1 teaspoon clear alcohol (vodka or surgical spirit)

  • 4 Essential oils:

    • Bergamot,

    • Sandalwood,

    • Ylang Ylang

    • and Vanilla

  • A 150 ml glass spray bottle

👉 In this video I used a plant-style glass sprayer it gives a finer mist than a standard room spray. It works well for a first try and that looks pretty too, but for a broader mist spread I’d go for an atomiser glass spray bottle. See my DIY Room Spray with Grapefruit and Sandalwood).

Choose the essential blend strength:

  • Light → 2% blend = ~50 drops

  • Medium → 3% blend = ~70 drops

  • Strong → 4% blend = ~95 drops

In this demo i am using a medium blend (3%) so 70 drops with

25 drops Bergamot

20 drops Sandalwood

15 drops Ylang-ylang

10 drops Vanilla

What I do:

  1. Add the essential oils and swirl gently to help them blend.

  2. Pour the alcohol into the ramekin

  3. Pour the blend into the distilled water, leaving a little space at the top.

  4. Pop the lid on and give it a good shake before each use.

Where I spray it : Into the air, onto curtains, and soft furnishings for an instant coastal escape.

I’d love to know which scent are you feeling nostalgic for this season? Tell me in the comments.
