Creating a Soho Home Atmosphere: Scenting for the “Twilight Gap”

There is a moment in the late afternoon, often called the “Twilight Gap” in design and psychology, where a home can suddenly feel a little hollow.

Most of us has experienced that strange transition whether it’s the moment you walk through the door after work or that hour when the light begins to fail where the productive energy of the day has vanished, leaving your home feeling suddenly cold and uninviting, as if the space is waiting for a warmth you haven't quite provided yet.

It’s the architectural equivalent of an awkward silence;)

Even a perfectly decorated space can feel flat during this shift. I like how Soho Home interiors solve this. They don't just focus on the furniture; they focus on the atmosphere layer that soft, settled feeling that makes you want to stay in a room a little longer.

The Moments of Comfort

Creating this atmosphere isn't really about decorating; it’s about noticing the moment a space shifts from functional to lived-in. It’s that feeling of a room being warm, comfortable, and slightly "undone"and then letting scent support that shift.

The Casual luxury: When the good glasses come out for a casua

l drink

The Sink-in: When you are sunk into a chair after 9pm

The Lingering drink…When a drink is left on the coffee table because the conversation was too good to leave

The Evening Glow: When the glow of a lamp stays on as the daylight fades

These aren’t staged moments; they are the quietly luxe reality of a house that is actually loved.

A home fragrance doesn’t create the experience, it deepens it

The “Soho Home” DIY inspired blend

To support these moments, I use a scent profile that is warm, woody, and slightly floral that adds a layer of softness in the background.

A soft floral lift (neroli, rose in the background)

Woods and resins (like cedarwood and amber)

A hint of spice (cardamom, clove, amber notes)

What You’ll Need

This makes about 20 ml of diffuser blend.

  • An ultrasonic diffuser with a refill bottle

  • A small funnel or bottle pourer

  • 20 ml essential oils :

    • 1 full bottle (10ml) Cedarwood The foundation.

    • 2/3 bottle (approx. 7ml) Neroli The soft, floral lift.

    • 1/3 bottle (approx. 3ml) Frankincense — The resinous warmth.

    • Optional: 10-drops of Cardamom for that extra cocooning spice.

How I Make It

  1. Measure and combine the oils

  2. Gently swirl them together in a small bowl or glass bottle. I use a small glass dressing bottle with a sprout)

  3. Pour the blend into your diffuser refill bottle

How I use it

.I start my ultrasonic diffuser in the hallway or lounge twenty minutes before the light hits that "flat" stage. In just one button press, the mist softens the corners of the room before I even sit down.

A final word

Ultimately, a Soho Home-inspired space isn’t about copying a specific look. It’s about leaning into a mood that feels private, creative, and quietly luxe. It’s the difference between a house that looks finished and a home that feels enveloping.

Bridging the Twilight Gap is just a reminder that our homes should work for us, especially in those quiet, transitional moments when we need a little extra warmth to lean into.
