How to Make Your Bathroom Smell Like a Spa

A spa atmosphere, without renovating your bathroom.

Most bathrooms don’t feel like spas and it is rarely because how they look.

It is because of how they smell.

A Spa bathroom isn’t about aesthetics. It ‘s about moments. The moments when you need your nervous system to unwind.

Scent is what tells your body: this moment is different.

The “I‘m Just Done “ Moment

When your body is home but your mind is still at work

The Boundary Moment

When the bathroom is the only room with a lock and you need it!

The Micro-Luxury Moment

When an ordinary routine becomes the only quiet pleasure of the day

The Switching-Off Moment

When screens are off and you can see yourself again

These moments are the moments we go to spas for even when we are at home.

What a Spa Scent smells like

A spa scent tends to feel:

- fresh

- herbal

- clean

In many modern spas including places like Cowshed that “cleanliness" comes from herbal notes rather than floral or sweet ones.

The Cowshed-Inspired Spa Spray

You’ll need:

  • 120 ml distilled or filtered water

  • 1 teaspoon clear alcohol (vodka or surgical spirit)

  • 3 Essential oils:

    • Eucalyptus,

    • Rosemary,

    • Lavender

  • A 150 ml glass spray bottle

In this demo I am using a medium blend (> 3%) so around 120 drops with

Eucalyptus : 60 drops = 2 teaspoons

Rosemary: 40 drops = 1 teaspoon and a little more (1+1/3 teaspoons)

Lavender: 20 drops

What I do:

  1. Add the essential oils and swirl gently to help them blend.

  2. Pour the alcohol and the essential oil blend into the distilled water, leaving a little space at the top.

  3. Pop the lid on and give it a good shake before each use.

How I use it :

I spray lightly on towels before or after a shower or mist the air when the bathroom is warm.

It is less about scenting a room and more about setting a tone.
